The format for other sections in Paper 2 will remain unchanged. Despite the fact that short stories and drama will not be assessed in public examination, English Language teachers still need to teach the aforementioned genre in the classroom. This is in accordance to the circular No. 7/2009, The 2nd cycle of the Malay and English Literature Component for Secondary School (Form 1 to Form 5). I do wonder why short stories are not assessed any longer, it would be interesting to know the others' views pertaining to this matter.

Addendum : For the circular, you can visit Kak Rahmah's blog.

Hi. I'm the one who gave a review before about the novels. I've read Step by Wicked Step and The Curse and I still stand by my decision on The Curse being a better novel. Regarding this matter, its also quite shocking to me, sorry to say, but I for one condemn the new format especially the removal of Shakespearean poems. The short stories for me were so-so. Its interesting however its too 'western' and I would like better if they tried to keep it close to our traditions and life customs.the drama was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING. I've looked it up in the Net and just like Step by Wicked Step it was created for children. The drama was cliche and dull. Expected and no elements that can attract the readers. Truly, the governments' first attempt to include drama was an UTTER FAILURE. I am sadden by the teachers' long hours and hard work doing the notes for the short stories and drama only to realised that it won't be tested in the exam. Again, the question that should be asked here is, Why is our education in English is going down the drain each year?

Hi Zhaf,
Thanks for your comment. My take on this, there's always two sides of the same coin. As you opined that The Curse is tad better than Step by Wicked Step, there are others who believe otherwise. The Curse banks on it's multi-layered flashbacks which may not appeal to some readers. I can't answer on behalf on CDC on the exclusion of Shakespearian poems but I assume they would like to expose various literary texts to students, apart from the Eng Lit canons. I reckon you prefer a more contemporary piece for drama? In regards to your view on the wasted time on notes and all, I believe that it's not wasted at all as the teachers can use the literary texts in the classroom to facilitate English Language teaching. Why limit short stories only during Eng Lit session? That's my 2 cents worth.

I've read form 4 short stories. totally cannot be accepted to be taught to the students. one of the stories is like "minyak pengasih" kind of story which i couldn't find any moral values or message in those stories. i had problem highlighting the values to students.i was wondering who are those panels responsible to select the literary materials?

Hi Mr/Miss/Mrs Anonymous,
I reckon the short story you are referring to is Fruitcake Special. Indeed, there's a mystical element in the short story. If you look from another point of view, it suggests to readers never to dabble in black magic when it comes to matters of the heart. Eventually, Anna, the protagonist in the story came to realisation that true love transcends mystical power or even 'love potion' of any kind. It may not be a conventional method of finding the moral values in a short story but it's one of the literary ways people could use when analysing texts. However, I do understand your deep concern on this matter.FYI, the panel comprises people who are selected by CDD, MOE.
